Harvard's Study of Lung Cancer and Marijuana

The fight for Medical Marijuana has had a strong supporter,  Harvard.  The following article is from their study regarding Lung Cancer and Marijuana medication.

They say this is the first set of experiments to show that the compound, Delta-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), inhibits EGF-induced growth and migration in epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) expressing non-small cell lung cancer cell lines. Lung cancers that over-express EGFR are usually highly aggressive and resistant to chemotherapy.
THC that targets cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2 is similar in function to endocannabinoids, which are cannabinoids that are naturally produced in the body and activate these receptors. The researchers suggest that THC or other designer agents that activate these receptors might be used in a targeted fashion to treat lung cancer.
"The beauty of this study is that we are showing that a substance of abuse, if used prudently, may offer a new road to therapy against lung cancer," said Anju Preet, Ph.D., a researcher in the Division of Experimental Medicine.
Acting through cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2, endocannabinoids (as well as THC) are thought to play a role in variety of biological functions, including pain and anxiety control, and inflammation. Although a medical derivative of THC, known as Marinol, has been approved for use as an appetite stimulant for cancer patients, and a small number of U.S. states allow use of medical marijuana to treat the same side effect, few studies have shown that THC might have anti-tumor activity, Preet says. The only clinical trial testing THC as a treatment against cancer growth was a recently completed British pilot study in human glioblastoma.
In the present study, the researchers first demonstrated that two different lung cancer cell lines as well as patient lung tumor samples express CB1 and CB2, and that non-toxic doses of THC inhibited growth and spread in the cell lines. "When the cells are pretreated with THC, they have less EGFR stimulated invasion as measured by various in-vitro assays," Preet said.
Then, for three weeks, researchers injected standard doses of THC into mice that had been implanted with human lung cancer cells, and found that tumors were reduced in size and weight by about 50 percent in treated animals compared to a control group. There was also about a 60 percent reduction in cancer lesions on the lungs in these mice as well as a significant reduction in protein markers associated with cancer progression, Preet says.
Although the researchers do not know why THC inhibits tumor growth, they say the substance could be activating molecules that arrest the cell cycle. They speculate that THC may also interfere with angiogenesis and vascularization, which promotes cancer growth.
Preet says much work is needed to clarify the pathway by which THC functions, and cautions that some animal studies have shown that THC can stimulate some cancers. "THC offers some promise, but we have a long way to go before we know what its potential is," she said.

Vote for Medical Marijuana

Alabama HB 386, Connecticut HB 5139 HB 5900 HB 6566, Illinois HB 0030, Idaho HB 19, Massachusetts HB 625, New York S 2774, New Hampshire HB 442, North Carolina HB 577, Ohio HB 214, Pennsylvania  SB 1003and Florida have legislature for Medical Marijuana.

Alabama, Connecticut, Illinois, Idaho, Massachusetts, New York, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Florida have legislature for Medical Marijuana.   This has been a hot button for years.   President Obama gave a green light for Medical Marijuana when he told the federal government to not encroach on growers, dispensaries and patients when they are within their own states laws.
The war on Marijuana has been a colossal waste of tax payer’s money and imprisonment of otherwise law abiding citizens.   The vilification of marihuana was originally the war on hemp and Marijuana was the easiest way for yellow journalist to build public ire.   Textile companies feared Hemps impressive workability would lessen the need for their cotton, trees and other products.
Harvard proved the healing power of marijuana regarding lung cancer.  Those still brainwashed by the thirties vilification are hampering the healing of many.  A lung cancer study of long time medical marijuana patients has never showed one sign of lung cancer.   No one has every died from marijuana use, solely.  There is no toxic level of marijuana.  Tobacco kills, Alcohol can kill on its own.   As he director of Oaksterdam stated. “The only way to kill a lab rat with marijuana is with a twenty pound bale of marijuana dropped from five feet.”
People of these states please vote yes to Medical Marijuana.   You have to realize that no matter what you think of marijuana, you can’t deny science.  The government and Pharmaceutical companies pump us full of poison pain killers.   But 80 years ago they banned the one thing that was a cure to so many illnesses.  Marijuana is the most effective medicine ever to be used unrefined and heal so many.
